OpenAI Rejects Google TPUs, Sticks with Nvidia and AMD Chips for Now

Despite testing Google’s AI chips, OpenAI doubles down on Nvidia, AMD, and custom silicon in a bid to maintain flexibility and control over its computing infrastructure.

  • OpenAI has confirmed it won’t widely adopt Google’s TPUs despite recent testing.
  • The company remains reliant on Nvidia and AMD chips while developing its own AI hardware.
  • OpenAI’s chip strategy emphasizes supply chain flexibility and long-term control.
  • Cost efficiency and competitive dynamics are shaping OpenAI’s hardware decisions.
  • Recent reports about a major shift to Google chips were overstated, as OpenAI downplays the partnership’s scale.

OpenAI has confirmed that it does not plan to adopt Google’s tensor processing units (TPUs) for its core operations, despite recent testing efforts aimed at evaluating the chips’ performance.

A company spokesperson clarified that while OpenAI is in the early stages of experimenting with Google’s hardware, there are no intentions to scale its deployment in the near term. This decision comes just days after reports surfaced that OpenAI had begun using Google TPUs to support some services, indicating a more cautious and limited integration than initially assumed.

Nvidia and AMD Still Carry the Load

The clarification reinforces OpenAI’s existing strategy of relying primarily on Nvidia and AMD chips to power its expansive artificial intelligence infrastructure. Nvidia’s GPUs, which account for the vast majority of AI acceleration hardware in the market, remain OpenAI’s go-to option.

Meanwhile, AMD’s presence is gradually increasing as the company introduces competitive alternatives to Nvidia’s dominance. Simultaneously, OpenAI is actively designing its own AI chip, which is expected to be finalized by the end of the year, with production scheduled to begin in 2026 using TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer process.

Although OpenAI recently entered a partnership with Google Cloud, the majority of its compute power is still expected to come from GPU servers operated by CoreWeave, a rising force in the AI infrastructure landscape. This suggests the partnership with Google is more about broadening capacity and managing risk than replacing existing compute providers.

Diversification is the Name of the Game

The broader context behind OpenAI’s decision is the industry-wide shift toward chip diversification. AI companies, faced with ballooning compute demands and supply chain bottlenecks, are increasingly blending hardware from different suppliers while investing in proprietary silicon. This hybrid approach not only enhances resilience but also gives firms more control over performance and cost efficiency. In OpenAI’s case, maintaining flexibility across Nvidia, AMD, and eventually its own chips allows it to avoid dependency on any single vendor.

The economics of AI also play a critical role in this calculus. Training and running large models like GPT-4 comes with staggering computational costs. Inference, where AI models actually respond to prompts, has become a particularly expensive phase of operation. Though Google’s TPUs are believed to offer meaningful cost savings over Nvidia’s chips for certain inference tasks, OpenAI’s reluctance to adopt them widely may be tied to competitive concerns.

Custom Chips Signal a Long-Term Vision

Google is itself a major player in the generative AI race, and OpenAI’s caution likely reflects the complexity of engaging a rival as a hardware supplier. This nuanced stance marks a sharp contrast to last week’s reports claiming OpenAI had already begun a broader transition to Google hardware. Those claims, though partially accurate, appear to have overstated the scale and permanence of the arrangement. OpenAI’s official position clarifies that any involvement with Google TPUs remains experimental for now and is not indicative of a full strategic pivot.

Instead, the company appears firmly committed to a diversified and independent chip roadmap. By continuing to leverage Nvidia and AMD while pursuing custom silicon, OpenAI is positioning itself for long-term efficiency and autonomy. As the AI arms race intensifies, the battle over compute hardware is becoming just as important as the battle over algorithms.
