  • AI Pricing Models Shift
  • Comet Browser Expands to Windows
  • Premium AI Faces Adoption Hurdles
  • Perplexity launches a $200+ Max plan aimed at professionals, offering advanced tools like Labs and the Comet browser.
  • AI companies are shifting to usage-based pricing as powerful models demand higher computing resources.
  • Perplexity’s Comet browser expands to Windows, signaling a move toward AI-powered, task-focused web browsing.
  • Premium AI services still face slow adoption, with most users reluctant to pay for tools priced above typical subscriptions.

Perplexity has introduced a new high-tier subscription called Perplexity Max, priced at over $200 per month. The plan is available across both iOS and the web and is designed with professionals in mind, including business strategists, researchers, and content creators.

Subscribers gain unlimited access to Labs, a toolkit for building AI-generated spreadsheets, presentations, and lightweight web applications.

The Max plan also offers early access to experimental features like Comet, a new AI-powered browser. In addition, users receive priority customer support and access to cutting-edge language models from leading providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic. This premium option joins Perplexity’s existing $20 Pro plan, which remains available for more casual users.

AI Pricing Models Shift

Perplexity’s move reflects a larger transformation taking place across the AI industry. As more companies deploy powerful models requiring immense computing resources, traditional per-seat pricing structures are being replaced by models that reflect actual usage and system demand.

This shift began with OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT Plus and has since expanded with similar offerings from Google, Anthropic, and others. The economics behind advanced AI tools are forcing firms to rethink their pricing strategies, balancing cost recovery with user affordability.

Perplexity Max fits squarely within this trend, offering features that go beyond chat responses and into productivity support, while justifying its higher price through access to compute-intensive AI infrastructure. The model highlights the growing divide between standard consumer tools and premium, professional-grade systems.

Comet Browser Expands to Windows

As part of its broader product strategy, Perplexity is also rolling out Comet, an AI-powered browser designed to make online tasks more efficient. Following a limited beta on Apple Silicon Macs in May, the browser is now being tested on Windows, with invitations sent to early users.

Comet is equipped with features that help users find discounts while shopping online, identify unanswered emails, and even preview how clothing might look by analyzing uploaded images. According to CEO Aravind Srinivas, an Android version is already in development ahead of schedule, although no public launch date has been confirmed.

This move into browsing represents a shift in how people interact with the internet. Browsers are evolving from passive navigation tools into intelligent assistants capable of anticipating and acting on user needs in real time.

Premium AI Faces Adoption Hurdles

Despite a rush to introduce premium features, many AI firms are finding it difficult to convert curiosity into paying customers. Recent studies show only a small percentage of users, around 9 percent in the US, are currently subscribed to AI services.

With consumers already balancing multiple subscriptions across entertainment and productivity platforms, competition for wallet share is intense. Perplexity appears to be responding by targeting its Max offering at niche audiences more likely to find value in premium AI, such as Millennial professionals and time-constrained creators.

As the industry continues to explore pricing strategies, the gap between innovation and mass adoption remains a key challenge. Perplexity’s expansion may be early proof that AI’s next frontier lies in deeper, more specialized use cases rather than mainstream appeal.
