Slide 2 PC is an all in one photo archiving solution

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Ion Audio has rapidly become one of my favorite gadget companies. First, they created the ION ITTUSB Turntable which allowed Baby boomers to take their vinyl LPs and rip them to digital mp3s. Then, Ion expanded that with the Tape 2 PC – which does the same thing for cassettes, a VHS version to capture old video home movies, and just about every other gadget in between. Now, they’re creating the next in that line with the SLIDES 2 PC, which allows photographers who have boxes of slides and negatives to digitize and archive generations of photographs and turn them into 5 megapixel digital stills. And do it at the simple touch of a button.

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Every once in a while, you want some space on your desk and you wish your desktop PC was smaller. The Fit-PC Slim may be the smallest computer of all, as it measures 4.3 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches.

Not only is it the smallest, but it might be the most energy efficient yet as it uses only 6 watts of power. It weighs in at a light 13 ounces.

So what is inside it? It has processor of an AMD Geode LX800 500MHz, 512MB RAM, plus the option of a 2.5″ hard drive. The Fit-PC is set up for Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity, and for VGA output.

Microsoft and McDonalds team up on WiFi access for Zune

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

It seems that McDonalds is serious about going after wireless traffic enjoyed by users at Starbucks and is seeking out like minded partners who can help them create an alternative. That’s where Redmond comes in as the two giants in their perspective industries have joined forces to provide free wireless connectivity to Zune users for the Zune Marketplace. That means the Zune faithful will be able to buy and download music from the Zune Marketplace through Wayport wiFi gateways in more than 9,800 McDonald’s restaurants.

The Rotating Electrical Outlet

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

From time to time I have a strong appreciation for the small and simple gadgets.  Yes, I love my overly complex iPod Touch, but it’s some of the smaller gadgets that make life just a little easier.  Lately, power strips are starting to see a smarter design where the outlets can twist and turn to accommodate different size plugs.  Well, there are other places besides the power strip for your computer that could use the same perks.  For one, the bathroom, with all of our smaller gadgets for torturing our hair or shaving off beards in the morning.

Those gadgets tend to have plugs that don’t always want to work well together.  Well with this cheap little gadget you won’t have to get nearly as frustrated over it.  The simple little outlet just allows for the individual head in the outlet to rotate independently.  This means that those bulky plugs should become a bit easier to use.  Luckily these little guys are cheap, you can pick them up in beige, white or black for $10 a piece.

Western Digital My Passport portable USB drives get memory bump

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Western Digital has decided to make available larger capacities for the My Passport line of portable USB drives, hitting the 500GB mark for folks who have plenty of data to tote about without being weighed down by size and weight. Available on My Passport Elite and My Passport Essential portable drive models, both of them will tip the scales at under 7 ounces and were specially designed to hold out on their own against the rigors of everyday use. Judging by their weight alone, you can tell that they’re small enough to slip into your pocket or backpack comfortably, and since it is bus-powered, you don’t have to worry about toting an additional power supply although you might have to rethink how you’re going to reorganize the use of your USB ports on the computer.
